I interviewed my husband who was a Chef in the Cooking Industry for years and is the most amazing Chef at home! He has a degree in Culinary Arts and has worked in prestigious restaurants from Napa Valley to Aspen, CO. I wanted to share with you what his kitchen essentials are. You can use any of these too!
10 Kitchen Cooking Tools
Immersion Blender or Stick Blender
This little gadget doesn’t get used as much as it could be or should be. It’s small and carries a big punch of power. There is such a wide range of uses for it – mixing scrambled eggs, making dressings, soups, we made baby foods, tomato sauce, milkshakes… the list could go on and on! It’s handy and pretty small making storing it easy. It’s a great alternative to a traditional blender.
Really Sharp Knives
Sharp knives are one of the most important things in any kitchen! My husband could not stress it enough. Dull knives rip and tear the foods you are trying cut – an example would be a tomato. A sharp knife would slice right through it keeping its shape while a dull knife would squish it pretty bad and be reluctant to cut through the skin. There is also a higher rate of injury because it does take more effort to cut and there is a little less control. It’s also fun to slice through a tomato like butter! So, keep your knives sharp!
This is more than a blender. This machine chops foods – what a blender can’t do very well. I can make a mean basil pesto using it – find my recipe here! My husband blends taco meat to break it down a bit more and to make it more even. He also makes pie dough and the best, fluffiest biscuits with it as well. We also have a tiny one, it approximately holds a cup and it is such a great tool to mince garlic cloves and grind spices and make spice rubs.
Not just any whisk – silicone enrobed ones. A lot of the whisking my husband does is in a saucepan, our non-stick Calphalon Pans, and metal whisks aren’t very good friends to our pans. That’s why the silicone ones are just perfect! I know some people can relate!
A good pair of tongs is very important. We have several – regular metal and silicone ones as well And some with short handles and some with long handles. They are used almost daily.
The stove… it’s a must! It’s where probably 75% of everything we eat is made. My husband uses it a ton for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I use it and my daughters – 2 and 4 years old – think they need to use it too!
A lot of what I make in the microwave can be made on the stove top. I find myself toasting bread on the stove top as well instead of the toaster.
A necessity for sure!
KitchenAide Stand Mixer
I don’t know what we did before we got one of these! We use it so much. We would use the hand held mixer all the time before our KitchenAide Stand Mixer came along and now I can honestly tell you I can count on one hand how many times we have used our hand held mixer since… we use this mixer for everything. I like making cookies most, but my husband grinds his own meat frequently with the meat grinder attachment. He makes the most amazing burgers on the planet and likes making meatballs, taco meat and sausage. He can case his own sausage too with the sausage casing attachment. We really do use it to it’s full potential! We have the pasta maker tool too and you can never go wrong with homemade pasta! It’s work, but so worth it.
This is an appliance I would highly recommend!
We have (so. many.) sheet pans! What I thought was just for cookies and toasting garlic bread we use for a wide variety of different foods.
They are great for staging meats and vegetables before cooking and are also just as awesome to put the cooked items on.
Also, can I say for cooking bacon…! Once you try cooking your bacon on a sheet pan in the oven, you’ll never want to go back. Patience is key on this one, but I think you’ll find that it’s totally worth it! It tastes absolutely fantastic, but clean up is minimal and there is no grease splatter on your stove top!
This is not an essential by any means, but it is a true love for my husband. My husband got a new Traeger Smoker not too long ago and he will smoke anything. …our Thanksgiving Day turkey, a fabulous beef brisket for Christmas, broccoli, asparagus, chicken wings, pizza, even his homemade bbq sauce. Our grill has officially been replaced.
A necessity? Well… everyone has got their own opinion…! 😊
These items are what we use in the kitchen almost every night. Cooking is fun and an art and you can get super creative with some of these utensils and appliances. Especially with some of the attachments that are offered.
