Pigs in a blanket are a favorite for adults and kids alike! They are fun, super simple, just two ingredients and so tasty! They are great for any time of day – breakfast, lunch or dinner and also great for gatherings, snacks, after school, tailgating… you name it! However, as good as your typical pigs in a blanket are – I decided to to make a pig that has all the elements of the traditional recipe, but added crunch, lots of crunch, and a tinge of sweetness. I decided to make flaky filo pigs in a blanket!
The filo “blanket” is delicate, flaky (of course), buttery, a touch sweet and crunchy! All my favorites for sure. Filo dough is a very very thin dough usually used for making pastries. Every single layer is brushed with butter or oil before being layered on top of each other and baked. Absolutely amazing!
Making Flaky Filo Pigs in a Blanket
The main ingredient for this recipe are the “baby hotdogs” as we call them in my family… and they are just that – baby hotdogs! Pull out a sheet tray and line with parchment paper so the pigs in a blanket will not stick to the pan.
Step one is to pull out the frozen filo dough to let thaw. This just takes minutes. While it is thawing this is a good time to melt butter. This butter will be used to brush onto each layer of the filo dough before wrapping it on the baby hotdogs. Also, get out a few teaspoons of brown sugar and place in a small bowl if you are thinking you might like the added hint of sweetness.
Next, unroll the filo dough and lay it flat. Count out ten sheets of filo dough. Take the butter and brush it on the first layer and sprinkle a small pinch of brown sugar on the dough. Then repeat this step 10 more times stacking the buttered layers on top of each other. For a side note: you can use as much or as little brown sugar as you would like! You can sprinkle it on every layer, every other, just a few or even just one layer.
Now, take a baby hotdog and measure its width on the buttered filo dough so that it reaches each end without being too long. Cut the filo dough into a strip and wrap it around the baby hotdog. Place on the baking sheet. Make sure to place the seam at the bottom so the dough will not burst open while baking.
Bake. Cool. Eat!
Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Taste!
It might seem like a lot of work, but it’s not too much more than traditional pigs in a blanket and you will be pleasantly surprised just how awesome they taste!
Flaky Filo Pigs in a Blanket
- 1 package Baby Hot Dogs Purchase your favorite kind!
- 1 package Filo Dough (let thaw and separate into 10 sheet stacks)
- 4 to 8 tbsp Butter - Melted
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees
Open package of baby hot dogs and set aside
Open package of filo dough and let thaw - this will take just a few minutes
While the filo dough is thawing - take 4 to 8 tablespoons of butter and melt it on the stovetop or the microwave
Take out a sheet tray and line with parchment paper - this will make sure the pigs in a blanket don't stick while cooking
Take the thawed filo dough and unroll and separate out 10 sheets. Lay out the dough in the landscape position. Lightly butter each sheet and stack. This is where you can add as much or as little brown sugar as you'd like. Use your fingers and sprinkle it on every layer or just a few. Next, take a baby hot dog and measure the width of it on the filo dough. Take a knife and cut a strip through the 10 pieces.
Take this strip and roll it on the baby hotdog
Place on the baking sheet an inch apart with the seam of the dough at the bottom. This ensures the pigs in a blanket will not unroll while cooking.
Bake at 400 degrees for 15 - 30 minutes or until golden brown - depending on how crispy you want them
Let cool a few minutes and ENJOY!
