Bacon is friendly to most foods, but especially Brussel Sprouts, which have become one of my all-time favorite vegetables! I know they can be an acquired taste, however, if you have never had them and you are going to try them (which I highly recommend!) – this is the route to go! And if you love these little vegetables like me, bacon Brussel sprouts make me excited to eat my vegetables and then some!
What are Brussel Sprouts?
Brussel Sprouts are part of the cabbage family and resemble miniature cabbages. They are actually buds that grow along a thick stalk and they have a very similar taste to cabbage, but just a bit more bitter. When they are cooked well, they are amazing! They get their name as they have been very popular in Brussels, Belgium for many many years. These sprouts are very high in fiber, vitamins – especially vitamin k, minerals and antioxidants.
Cooking Brussel Sprouts
I start with the bacon! Take your favorite bacon and cook it. I have a great way here to make it in the oven! It’s super easy and while it’s cooking in the oven you can prep your Brussel sprouts. Wash them well, dry them and start by cutting off the bottom of each sprout. From here, I like to slice each sprout into thin slices. About a 1/4 inch. Take a large skillet and add a few tablespoons of olive oil and add your Brussel sprouts. Cover with a lid and cook on medium. Stir occasionally.
In the meantime, take your cooked bacon and chop it up into small cubes, once it has cooled a bit! After getting your bacon chopped up, place it in the same pan with your Brussel sprouts – I like to add a tablespoon or two of bacon grease too to add an extra bacon-y kick! However, this is just optional, but highly recommended!
Cook until soft, browned a bit crispy. To finish them up I add salt and pepper to taste as well as garlic powder. Stir them up really well and they are ready to be eaten!
I think you will be pleasantly surprised how much you will like these!
