Who Doesn’t Love Cake?

A few or more years back when I was in college, I took a cake decorating class. That’s when I fell in love with cake and everything it entails…making it, baking it, decorating it, and especially eating it! While I fell in love with the details in college, my whole life, I have always loved eating cake! (Who wouldn’t)! Everyday needs cake in my world! During the stacking and decorating process, the cakes always need trimming. Whether it needs just a small layer off the top or a lot, there is always cake and icing left over. At least at my house. Extra is always better! Yet, despite all the scraps to snack on, I still have cake and icing left over on rare occasions. Or sometimes I just have extra cakes. What to do?

Quick & Easy

In class, all the extra cake was gathered into one bowl. It didn’t matter what flavor, what ratio of cake to icing, and there was probably a bit of brownie and cheesecake thrown in the mix too! Blend it all together in one large bowl and add Rum! That’s it. It’s a sweet mess of yum! We’d form into balls and roll in cocoa powder or powdered sugar. Done! They were crazy delicious! Quick and easy! However, I like to intentionally make these sweet treats and I personally like to go the extra mile (sometimes, if they’re for company) and dip mine in chocolate and decorate for the occasion.

They’re perfect for your ADULT (not the littles) friends and family! Not to mention, an easy two bite, non-messy, poppable sweet treat dessert. Include the little ones though! You can certainly make them without the rum! They’re just like cake balls! 

Let’s Make Rum Balls

How easy it is to make these sweet bites?! Crazy easy! All you need is 

  • Cake (Any flavor)
  • Icing (Any flavor)
  • Rum

To begin, make any cake or two you’d like, your favorite recipe or a box mix, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, pumpkin. Or if you make a good amount of cakes, save your scraps!

Finish with a splash or more of rum.

Adding rum to cake

Just make it wet enough so it sticks together when rolled, but don’t go overboard. If you add too much rum, they’re just a gooey mess. Add chocolate chips or nuts for a surprising crunch. There’s really no right or precise way.

Roll into uniform balls or press into silicon molds. Freeze for at least 30 minutes or more. Unmold and cover in sweetened cocoa powder or powdered sugar. Or cover in sprinkles. If you want to get fancy, melt some chocolate and dip them completely. Decorate gorgeous and serve!

There are no strict measurements, and they take no time at all. Plus, you can go fancy or keep them simple! But it’s a guarantee you and all your guests will enjoy every bite!

Tips & Tricks 

Use a cookie scoop. This makes the process quicker and more uniform.

Use food safe gloves. The cake is rather sticky, so these come in handy when rolling into balls. But don’t fret if you don’t have any. Simply dust your hands with powdered sugar ever so often.

Serve Chilled. They hold their shape better and are easier to handle. They get a little ooey gooey once they reach room temperature, but they’re still crazy delicious.

Rum Balls

Fun, boozy, poppable cake balls!

Course Dessert
Prep Time 30 minutes


  • 4 Cups Baked Cake (crumbled)
  • 1/2 Cup Icing
  • 2-4 Tbsp Rum
  • 1/3 Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Cocoa Powder


  1. In a large bowl, add the crumbled cake and icing. Mix together until completely incorporated.

  2. Add the rum and mix well. Add more or less depending on the consistency. You’ll want the cake to hold its shape when squeezed together.

  3. Use a cookie scoop to make uniform balls or simply roll into 1 inch balls. Use food safe gloves so they don’t stick to your hands or dust your hands with powdered sugar.

  4. Place onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and pop them into the freezer for about half an hour.

  5. Roll in powdered sugar or cocoa powder. Your choice!

  6. Cover and keep in the refrigerator for up to three days or enjoy immediately!
