Blueberries scream summer to me! I love the sweet, yet tart taste you get – some are all sweet and some are all tart and make you pucker up, but most are a great combination of the two. It just makes you smile! I love eating blueberries on their own and in or with a wide variety of foods, but making a blueberry sauce opens up more options to eat these scrumptious little bright bursts of blueberry-ness!
Blueberry sauce is just that – a sauce, but with texture from the whole blueberries and sweetness with a touch of lemon. It’s perfect! I’ll add that it’s quick and simple too. If I don’t watch it, my girls will eat it all (I’m known to help!), before we get to put it on anything.
I make it in small batches, usually when my girls want it since it’s so quick and easy to make. We have no self control! We always lick the bowl clean every time it’s made-it’s that delicious! I keep the batches small, but feel free to make as much as you want. Refrigerate and use as needed.
You should try it and see just how tasty it is. Here is what you will need.
- Small saucepan
- Blueberries – fresh ones are great, but frozen work just as well – it’s usually what I have on hand
- Granulated sugar
- Corn starch
- Fresh lemon juice
First, I measure approximately one cup of blueberries – fresh or frozen work great. For this particular instance, I used frozen because I had them on hand. Then, I place them in the saucepan on medium low heat.
I then add two tablespoons of sugar to the blueberries, two tablespoons water and a half-tablespoon of lemon juice. I also add in a half-tablespoon cornstarch – mix it in a small bowl with another tablespoon of water and then pour it into the blueberry mixture. Don’t put it straight into the blueberries or it will clump up.
Next, turn up the heat and let it come to a boil just for a few seconds. Let cool for a few minutes and you’re done! It really does come together quick.
If you have a dinner party and forget the dessert – pull out the vanilla ice cream and make this blueberry sauce to dress it up and give it flavor. It’s such a beautiful color and tastes amazing! Grate some lemon zest on top for a pop of color!
One of my favorite things to put it on is actually breakfast sausage. It compliments the saltiness and unique sausage taste so well. It’s a perfect pairing.
It also goes well on pancakes, waffles and French toast. You can replace the syrup with the blueberry sauce or you can add maple syrup right into the blueberry sauce if you prefer – if you really like the syrup taste with your breakfast, which sometimes I do!
It’s great with yogurt and oatmeal as well.
Don’t be afraid to try it on other things too. It’s so simple and versatile and would work with a wide variety of desserts, but explore savory dishes as well.
